Good progress refining objectives in Northland Scallop plan
July 11, 2008
At its meeting on 19 June, the Northland Scallop Fishery Plan Advisory Group began developing the ideas and issues raised in the previous meeting’s brainstorming session into objectives to guide the management of the fishery. The Group made good progress rewording and sorting the ideas from the brainstorm into relevant categories. MFish group members have been tasked with continuing to develop the ideas into specific objectives, which will be further developed by the Group at the next meeting.

Objective setting for North-west Finfish Plan

The North-West Finfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group held its fifth meeting in Auckland on 24 June. Environmental representatives presented information about ecosystems and non-extractive users in the region, and MFish staff presented information about customary management tools and commercial reporting forms. The Group made a start on determining objectives for the fishery by brainstorming ideas of what different sectors want for the fishery. The Group discussed these ideas and assigned them to broader categories. At the next meeting on 31 July, the Group will continue developing these ideas into goals and objectives.

FOURTH MEETING OF THE NORTH WEST FINFISH PLAN

At the fourth meeting of the North West Finfish Plan held on Thursday 29 May the advisory group continued its review of the contents of the information brief and discussed how best to incorporate customary information from different regions along the west coast. During the meeting new measures to protect Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins were announced and the group discussed the potential impacts of the decision. At the next meeting, the group will begin setting objectives for the future management of the west coast fisheries. This meeting will be held in Auckland on Tuesday 24 June.

Northland Scallop Advisory Group Begin Objective Setting

The Northland Scallop Advisory Group has begun the process of setting objectives for the future management of the fishery. At its fifth meeting on the 15th of May, the group began with a brainstorming session and then sorted the many different ideas this produced into thirteen categories. The group also heard Jonathan Peacey (MFish’s National Manager Fisheries Operations) talk on the broader context for fisheries planning in New Zealand and Dave Olsen (a major processor of scallops in Northland) talk about the importance of Northland Scallop fishery from an economic perspective. At the next meeting on the 19th of June, the group will refine the objectives raised in the brainstorming session and will hear some members of the group discuss the importance of scallops to customary fishers in Northland.

CRA 3 MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES CONFIRMED

The CRA 3 Multi-stakeholder Fishing Forum has recently agreed to 14 management strategies for the Gisborne red rock lobster fishery. The proposed management strategies are designed to build a sustainable CRA 3 fishery, ensure a healthy CRA 3 fisheries environment, and provide a fishery for all sectors.
The CRA3 Forum has incorporated the agreed strategies into a second draft CRA 3 Fisheries Management Plan which has just been reviewed by the National Rock Lobster Management Group and science advisors.

CHALLENGER FINFISH GROUP BEGINS OBJECTIVE SETTING
May 8, 2008
At its fifth meeting, the Challenger Inshore Finfish Plan Advisory Group reviewed the goals for the fishery it had brainstormed at earlier meetings. Three broad goals were agreed and the group then began setting specific objectives on how to get the best value from the fishery. Time was also spent discussing the draft Harvest Strategy Standard. Objective-setting will continue at the next meeting in late May.

SECOND MEETING OF NORTH ISLAND WEST COAST FINFISH ADVISORY GROUP
April 11, 2008
The West Coast North Island Finfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group had an excellent second meeting at the Manukau Cruising Club on 31 March. The Group is made up of representatives from iwi, commercial and recreational fishers and environmental groups. The Group discussed the current information about the fishery, which includes snapper, tarakihi, gurnard and john dory. The Group’s next meeting is scheduled for May.

SOUTHERN SHELLFISH GROUP SET OBJECTIVES FOR FISHERY
April 11, 2008
At its seventh meeting, held on 29 March at MFish's Dunedin office, the Group agreed on goals and objectives for the Southern Shellfish Fisheries Plan. MFish is now checking the objectives against relevant laws and standards. The Group will meet again on 17 May when it will confirm these objectives and start assessing whether current management is on track to meet the objectives.

GROUP WORKS ON OBJECTIVES FOR HIGHLY MIGRATORY SPECIES
April 11, 2008
Work continues on a fisheries plan for large pelagic fisheries (which include tuna and gamefish). At the third meeting held in Auckland on 7 April, the advisory group refined its overall goals for the fishery and began to develop management objectives. The advisory group agreed to work between meetings on objectives to ensure progress at the next meeting, scheduled for 30 May.

PAUA 5A GROUP BEGINS WORK ON OBJECTIVES

The Paua 5A Fisheries Plan Advisory Group finished reviewing background information on the fishery at its meeting on 27 March. At this meeting the Group also began work on setting goals and objectives for getting the best value from the fishery. The Group will continue developing goals and objectives at its sixth meeting in Invercargill in late April. The Paua 5A fishery covers Fiordland and part of the western Southland coast.

CRA 3 FISHERIES PLAN CLOSE TO BEING FINALISED
March 28, 2008
The CRA 3 Multi-stakeholder Fishing Forum is on track with its plans to finalise the Fisheries Plan for the Gisborne red rock lobster fishery. Most management strategies proposed in the CRA 3 plan have the support of all sectors – customary, recreational, and commercial. Over the next few weeks, the CRA 3 Working Group will meet and discuss ways to resolve disagreement between sectors over two issues. The CRA 3 Forum intends to send the final plan to the Minister by mid-June 2008, after seeking expert feedback on the draft plan from the National Rock Lobster Management Group and science advisors.

GOOD PROGRESS FOR NORTHLAND SCALLOPS ADVISORY GROUP

The Northland Scallop Fishery Plan Advisory Group held its third meeting on Monday 17 March. The group of eleven people representing the recreational, customary, commercial and environmental sectors has nearly finished reviewing the background information for the fishery and will soon begin developing agreed goals. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 8 April in Paihia.

HIGHLY MIGRATORY SPECIES GROUP STARTS WORK ON OVERALL GOALS FOR LARGE PELAGIC FISHERIES

At its second meeting, on 10 March, the fisheries plan advisory group for highly migratory species discussed overall goals for large pelagic fisheries. The goals show the vision that different planning group participants have for these fisheries. They will also set the scene for determining fisheries objectives, which will be more specific and measurable. At its next meeting the group will do more work on fisheries goals and start work on determining specific objectives.

FIRST MEETING FOR NORTHWEST FINFISH
February 29, 2008
The Northwest Finfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group had its first meeting on February 28 with 26 attendees representing tangata whenua, commercial, recreational, environmental groups and MFish. The Plan covers an area from North Cape to Wellington and many species cherished by fishers and diners alike, such as snapper, gurnard, trevally and flatfish. The next meeting is planned for March 31.

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR HARVEST STRATEGY STANDARD SUBMISSIONS
February 21, 2008
The deadline for submissions on the draft Harvest Strategy Standard has been extended to March 14, 2008 after requests from several stakeholders. The former deadline was February 29th. When approved, the Standard will require that target and limit reference points be set for all QMS fishstocks, but is flexible about how this is achieved.

SURVEY METHODS DISCUSSED FOR NORTHLAND SCALLOPS

The Northland Scallops Fisheries Plan Advisory Group held its second meeting Pahia on the 11th of February. Scientists explained how the surveys of scallop beds are done and how the survey results are used to guide management of the fishery. The Group discussed the summary information to ensure it properly describes the fishery. The next meeting is planned for the 17th of March.

GOOD PROGRESS FOR PAUA 5 FISHERIES PLAN ADVISORY GROUP
January 29, 2008
The Paua 5 fishery covers Fiordland and part of the western Southland coast. The group, representing all fishing sectors, has met three times in Invercargill to discuss the current state of the fishery, familiarise themselves with management issues, before working on setting objectives for the fishery. The next meeting is in February and the group will visit a Bluff paua hatchery that supplies stock for re-seeding Paua 5 and other areas.

SOUTHERN SHELLFISH FISHERIES PLAN GROUP INSPECT TOHEROA BEDS
January 28, 2008
The Southern Shellfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group had its fourth meeting in Bluff on January 19 in a series of meetings for stakeholders to get a common understanding of the fishery and each others interests. The meeting, based at Awarua Marae, included an inspection of toheroa beds on Oreti Beach. The group will move on to setting objectives for the fishery at its next meeting on February 16.

It was an introductory meeting, giving participants the chance to meet each other, discuss the aims of fisheries plans and consider the process for developing the Northland Scallop Fish Plan.

CRA 3 FORUM RELEASES DRAFT FISHERIES PLAN FOR STAKEHOLDER INPUT

The CRA 3 Multi-stakeholder Fishing Forum has developed the first draft Fisheries Plan for the East Coast red rock lobster fishery (Wairoa River to East Cape, known as CRA 3). This is a significant milestone for the CRA 3 Working Group (which is a sub-group of Forum representatives) whose members have voluntarily put in a lot of time and effort over the last few months to develop the draft Management Plan for the Forum.

Revised Draft Harvest Strategy Standard Released
December 14, 2007
The revised Draft Harvest Strategy Standard has been released for consultation. The draft Standard was first released in November 2006. As a result of feedback from stakeholders and further work by the Ministry, the draft Standard has been substantially revised. When approved, the Standard will require that target and limit reference points be set for all QMS fishstocks but is flexible about how this is achieved. Information on using the Harvest Strategy Standard is contained in the Operational Guidelines.

Feedback on the Draft Harvest Strategy Standard is requested by 29 February 2008.

Successful First Meeting of Challenger Finfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group
December 13, 2007
The Challenger Finfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group met for the first time on 12 December at the Nelson MFish Office. Representatives from the recreational, environmental, and commercial sectors, and a Tangata Whenua representative from the West Coast, discussed their long-term vision for their fisheries and how the Advisory Group would work together to develop the fisheries plan.

Southern Shellfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group meeting

The Southern Shellfish Fisheries Plan Advisory Group met on Saturday 8th December. The Group heard presentations on customary fishing and the commercial kina and surf clam fisheries, and reviewed the remainder of the draft plan describing the fisheries covered by the Plan.
